Happy Slap Boutique @ Rumpus – Shiny!

10 Apr

This weekend I worked with the ever wonderful Happy Slap at Rumpus in London.

The theme was shiny, and oh boy – do Happy Slap Boutique know how to do shiny!!

We bought about 17kg of glitter, and by the end of the night, every happy person in the place was covered in the stuff. It’s still happily trailing its way around my clothing, house, housemates, my cat and generally anything I have come into contact within the past few days. It’s a good job I like glitter.

On the night we had our performers in bald caps (it never ceases to amaze me how good people look in bald caps – particularly glitter covered bald caps.), we also did some collaborative body paints which was a new experience and also lots of fun, it helped eradicate that feeling of getting too intimately obsessed with a piece when on a tight time schedule, moving onto the next person as and when needed.

As usual, I can’t wait for the next one! Find us at Beaverworks for Beaverfest and the Rumpus Mega Event in June!

Happy Slap Boutique: Rumpus Vol. 16

22 Jun

I haven’t been able to update this post from images only in a while, so I shall elaborate briefly!

Once again I had the pleasure of working with Happy Slap Boutique at Rumpus. The theme was greatest stories never told, and our room hosted the unhappily ever after chapter of this magical event. Surrounded by blood stained books and a skeleton chandelier, we created a stage of gruesome performances and filled the room with the kind of funky bass beats you can’t help but dance to.

Happy Slap welcomed some new faces to the team, including the enthusiastic Mr Daniel Focker who amazed us with great performances and awesome gymnastics – he even had the bouncers filming his backflips!

As always, I cannot wait to play out at the next Rumpus and explore with all the amazing creature that attend – until next time!

Rumpus – 20,000 Creatures Under The Sea.

5 Mar

Wow, another amazing night by Rumpus, they just keep getting better!

Last Saturday the Happy Slap Boutique Crew once again joined forces with the brilliant people at Rumpus and ventured on to the Stubnitz with lots of exciting ocean treats for the lovely crowds!

A few of us Happy Slappers getting ready to board!

A few of us Happy Slappers getting ready to board!

We all got our sea rags on and got to work, making up ourselves and our shipmates. I made sure Scott grabbed a picture of my hair/makeup before the night started as I knew it might just get a bit crazy later on!

I decided on the makeup on the day, though I wish I had done more research now as I chose to loosely base this look on the fins/tail of japanese fighting fish and I could have done so much more if spending more time on it! Definitely an inspiration point to keep hold of. If you don’t know what they look like, here is a quick picture.

Having finished my own makeup, next job was the performers. This was the first time I’ve been able to fully do one of the performers so it was great (although I worked with the wonderful Tash Hobbs too who did the hair!). This took me about an hour to do and was pretty much stress free. I wish I had more time so I could have done a much more in depth paint job, however results are good and I can get that done next time! Here is the final result – you can’t really see the detail in the metallic colours i used but as always she looks stunning. Even without legs.

As usual the makeup boutique was loads of fun and it was great to get everyone made up into exciting creatures. I don’t know if it as because it was day time or it was the setting but everyone seemed so buzzed in such a different way and I got to chat to loads of the customers  about how much they were enjoying themselves which was fantastic. We closed the boutique once the party was in full swing and got to the games with our top DJ Ocelus (https://soundcloud.com/ocelus).

We had awesome performances from our sailor boys and mermaids – along with lots of cheeky nautical chat up aeroplanes flying about. Check out the pictures below.

The party was so much fun, and I met even more really amazing people and got chance to speak properly to the amazing people I met briefly last time! So much fun! Following the 11pm finish we all headed of to cause more trouble, singing songs and performing for the tube users of london and laughing away the rest of the night!

Rumpus Myths & Legends

2 Feb

During this past week I have been in London, working with the Happy Slap Crew to create costume and develop makeup designs for Rumpus on the Friday just gone.

The week was pretty exciting, though there was lots to be done! I started off helping to create a set of wings and some stencils for the dragon body paint.  (Body Paint by Grace McComisky)

Details of how I helped make these wings are in my sketchbook for uni as I can’t be giving away someone else’s tips & tricks! 🙂

I then got to work on my first wig, although next time I will be getting out of the box and spending more time on it! It was curled and plaited and arranged in a game of thrones style. I didn’t like the headdress I created so borrowed one from Grace – something else I need to be working on in the coming weeks… perhaps in preparation for the Boomtown Party at the end of March!

My MUA wife Tash Hobbs and I were to be dressed as princesses, for my own costume I decided to go for a griffin princess, sporting gold pieces from the wardrobes of Betty Swaffield and Clare Edwards and feathers. I was actually quite pleased with my makeup as usually there is barely time to think before we start with all the other fun things we have to create!

After lots of hard work and a few Raspberry Daiquiris, we were ready to go. Starting early on Friday morning we got to the venue and begun dressing out our room, creating a setting for a party to remember. We presented the Dragon’s Lair, complete with ball pool and den. Lots of funky music was played and after finishing with the makeup boutique, I partied on down!

At about 3.30am, we did the 3min body paint. After practising the night before we had just about got this to a T. After stripping down the lucky volunteer from the crowd, the four of us converted him into a jester. Maybe next time someone less drunk and latex covered will produce a better result haha! It was so much fun though and everyone loved the experience.

Rumpus is a truly brilliant party – not only brilliant, it’s huge! Spanning over 7 different areas! Everyone gets involved and it is full of beautiful people. I can’t wait for my next adventure with these guys! See you in April! I’ll leave you with a few cheeky pictures of the event!
