Applying and Colouring a Foam Latex Piece.

Today I completed the final step of my fiberglass mould/foam latex piece process.

Having completed my hand and left it to set, I returned to apply it. Despite being stretched over the mould is did shrink slightly, however not too much that it couldn’t still be applied.

Being short on time and seeing as the hand had been cast from my own, I decided to just apply it to myself.  Unfortunately I’m right handed, and the piece was on my right hand; so I’d given myself a challenge.

I covered the area of my hand that would be touching the prosthetic in pros-aide, and then applied pros-aide to the piece. Once they had both become clear and tacky, I gently started from my finger tips and stretched the piece slowly over my hand. It stuck perfectly. As the edges were slightly too thick, I used pro-bondo (a thickened pros-aide) to smooth down and blend out the edges.

Once I had done this I had two colouring options. A) Illustrator (alcohol based paint) or, B) Pax paint (equal parts of pros-aide and acrylic paint). Having had more practice with the illustrator i decided to go for this – I couldn’t seem to mix the Pax to the colour I wanted. I layered up my illustrator colour with a stiff brush, spraying the colour across my hand, I then used a thin brush to accent the shadow and highlight around my circular edges.

Overall, I think I did okay to say I was painting with my left hand only, however I think  the colour had merged a lot and was not quite as bright and inky looking as I wanted – however it does correspond to my initial design.

Reflection and Photography

I dream of travelling the world, meeting people from every corner and widening my reality.

I want to understand people’s faces, I want to learn about people not just from their words, but from what I see and experience. I feel through excessive use of media my senses have become dulled to the world around me. I have spent hours and hours in from of my laptop, often living what I see as an almost purely synthetic existence. Don’t get me wrong – the internet is a vast melting pot of useful information and inspiration to be seized, but what and I really gaining from the experience? Could I be spending my time on this earth better?

Being an individual who’s every action depends upon intensive gut feelings, I think perhaps the reason my life sometimes feels so empty, is because I am not listening to what my mind and soul are asking for. Vivid, interactive personal experience.

When considering my art, within the fashion industry I have found makeup can be quite passive – and is often dictated by someone else. I myself am a result of media contortion and am often incredibly self objective, as are many other women (and men). I do not want to be part of an industry in which women are made to feel uncomfortable with themselves and their lives. I watched a great Ted Talk my friend Steph posted up and it summarises these issues well. Take a look….

Whilst working within the fashion industry, we feel are creating something beautiful, but in actual fact we are producing only destruction. We are crushing the self confidence of millions of women, debilitating their daily lives and increasing self hate and jealousy. Why are we doing this to ourselves? Is this really how we think we should be acting and feeling? Is there not something better for us out there?

I feel by doing any kind of fashion makeup, I am tearing myself away from the path towards my mountain (thanks for the advice Gaiman!) – both morally and artistically. I feel I have been easily led into fashion by the promise of instantaneous reward, particularly in monetary terms. However, despite the draw, I am to stop taking part in this game and follow what is true to myself, now focussing on my workshop practice (the SFX discipline I most enjoy), along with performance work.

Back to the photography side of this post.

I want to really focus on life, I want to get out there, see it, do it, capture it. I have decided to get back into photography. My main interest is within documentary, journalistic and portraiture photography – but I’m not going to focus on that too much whilst I learn to use my camera again. I feel by doing this I will train myself to look closer into what is around me and re-connect with people – or even just learn to connect as I am a child of the social media technology era and have grown up plugged in.

From now on, you shall be getting more mini-updates, as I invite you to share in my life adventure, one photo at a time.

I cant promise they’ll all be wonderful, but everyone starts somewhere. It’s just where it takes you along the way that is what matters.

I implore you do do something that will take you to new places, and fill your heart with light and happiness.
Look beyond your computer screen and reach to the world outside.

Shoot: Beauty and the Beasts

Today I shot with Photographer Kate Love, we seem to have a love of abusing the beautiful Model; Alix Dent.

The theme of the shoot was beauty vs. unsightliness, to be created in a fashion/editorial style. I initially wanted to use old aged hands, using latex glove prosthetics; however the appliances had deteriorated by the time we got round to the shoot, so they had hardened and become more opaque.

I instead decided to use Sculpt Gel for the one handed image, along with liquid latex, greasepaints, wound filler, blood and congealed blood. In my opinion the colouring is pretty shoddy, I’m really not good at this casualty style work and have no patience for it, as much as I continue to try. I just get frustrated with this type of mess. I much prefer the workshop FX. That said, the final images turned out well.

Below is the final image for the one hand shot. I quite like it, although you can’t actually really see the sculpt gel – maybe it needed more colouring. The hand doesn’t looked as strong on camera as it did on real life, it should have been old aged but it was hard to create the ageing in the sculpt gel, so I went for a more decayed but alive zombie look… having had inspiration for a development for a final image…

It seemed Kate and I were on the same wavelength, as she suggested using multiple hands; something I had been considering on the bus to the shoot! With the old aged thing failing, we decided to go for multiple decaying zombie hands, with Alix appearing to be captured by then. I made up kate’s little sister’s hands (who I had been giving a few quick lesson on FX), both of Alix’s hands and one of my own, before getting into position to take the shot.

Winner. One for the portfolio… I love Alix’s face.

SHOOT: Pretty Grunge; with Scott Salt & Lunar Rising

Today I decided to do a quick practice fashion shoot, with my favourite model and photographer – Abi Wright and Scott Salt!

Initially the shoot was meant to be a boho experimentation, linking to my  Task 2 work so I could practice my make-up. However, having just received many new beautiful items in the post, I decided instead to style based on my new pretty pieces.

I still used the main principles of my Task 2, keeping to an English Rose style of makeup, though darkening it for the black outfits. I also managed to still involve curled volume (after using hot sticks) and plaits in the hair, keeping the style simple and elegant.

Overall I’m really happy with the shoot, I need to develop my fashion portfolio and I am quickly gaining confidence now in this style of makeup after recently having the realisation I can literally draw, paint and create whatever I want. Seems a simple revelation but it’s taken a while to come to terms with it!

Creative Wig Making

A couple of days ago, I begun work on my first creative wig. I’ve been doing mood boards, research and drawings for the past few days now.

This piece is for my Task 3 Media Postiche, a creative wig for a performer. I was intending to shoot it this weekend – however it has now been postponed due to some travel issues.

I bought a gorgeous, extra long candy floss wig from Geisha wigs; take a look at her website, she has so many beautiful pieces!

I used some extra hair I had from other ventures, and created knotted balls. I then sewed these onto the wig and covered them with the candy floss hair, securing with thread and elastic bands. I made sure to backcomb all the roots to cover the mesh onto which the hair was sewn.

I then created plaits to begin adding detail and style to the piece, styling the flatter sides with pin curl style plaits and flowers. The fringe is going to be cut short and blunt on the model.

This has taken me maybe 8 hours? I have perhaps another 10 left to spend, you’ll have to wait until I shoot it to see it in its full glory!

Today I also took some time out to help my friend Abi with a test shoot for her uni work. I created a makeup look as per her brief. There are a few changes we will be making for next time, but it was a good session for trying out some ideas. I curled the models hair with hot sticks and then backcombed and pinned into a loose style. I loved doing this to her hair, as she has pinks, purples and blues running through it and they looked amazing all clashed together. Images soon!

I’m having a really girly phase at the moment, I’m loving my pastels, creams, sequins, flowers and metallics. I think I’m craving spring.

Sue Day: Silicone Painting & Hair Punching Lesson

Today we had a session with Sue Day, who works at Madame Tussaud’s. We have been working with Martin from Madame Tussaud’s for a few weeks now on life casting, however Sue came in to teach us about painting silicone and hair punching.

Using a ready made silicone piece (originally of David Beckham), we practiced colouring. We used a silicone/turps/oil paint mix, creating the consistency and colours ourselves.

I wanted to work with a “flesh” coloured piece so I could create a more realistic look, but instead was given a opaque red-pink piece. I instantly gave it  green wash to try combat the horrible colour; though not knowing yet how to use the paint, I did leave a few green dots – oops. Using the flicking technique with a stiff brush and light washes with a small brush, I built up layers of colour to create a human skin pattern, paying attention to where certain colours would lie in the skin, such as more blues for the thin eye skins, where veins would show through.

She then showed us how to punch hair, the actual punching is pretty easy.

All you need is a normal needle; cut the end off the eye so you have a fork-like implement, then mount this in a needle grip handle (the same one used for a knotting needle). Next push the hair into the silicone, the key is the angle and direction. You need to study how the hair grows out of the skin to ensure a realistic growth pattern,  keeping the needle very horizontal if you want the hair to lie on the skin surface, vertical if pushing away from the body.

We were meant to use curled hair (curled by wrapping straight hair around a chopstick and boiling), however I wanted to create old man eyebrows, which often are quite messy and stick out a lot, so I used straight human hair.

Teaching Makeup

Recently I have found myself teaching lots of people bits of makeup; be it people who are generally interested in doing makeup, do face painting at events, or performers seeking to improve their act.

Initially, I was cautious of sharing, cautious of adding competition to an already saturated industry. However, I quickly came to realise that what ever you want from the world, is what you should be giving yourself – why stifle happiness, progress and art when you can help spread it! I think having positive faith in the world and the depth of people is important, in fact it’s a view that is vital to my mental well being. Look after the world and it will look after you.

So, recently I’ve been teaching both John Godbolt and Sophia Weatley (Bella Trix) some performance makeup, so they can do it themselves when on the job. The simplest of tips can make something so much better! In return I’ve been receiving stilt and hoops lessons – and I am improving for sure, it’s exciting stuff! I’ll be posting videos up as soon as I can get something good (or at least entertaining) sorted.
