IMATS 2013

22 Jun

SATURDAY

I forgot how busy the IMATS gets!

I was a little disappointed that there were no paint stall this year, i wanted to update my body painting kit! However at least there were lots of body painters displaying their work to give me inspiration! My favourite shop hands down has to be Bdellium tools. I am in love with their brushes – I bought 14 of them.  I really think they should ask me to work for them because I could then show people how awesome they are and every else will want to buy them too!

I also bought a new face painting brush kit from Royal & Langnickel – for festivals and other mainly paint based jobs, as I am sick of finding glitter in my “normal” makeup. I’m pretty damn excited to use it and glad to be downsizing; less cleaning of brushes (the most boring thing about the job..) and I only use a few brushes usually anyway! I got some new super dense Kabukis for body paints too; I love them. I also got some dedicated brushes for white greasepaint… if anyone dares to mix these up at festivals they will be in trouble!

Initially i had been most excited about the talks and demonstrations, however i wasn’t grabbed by them. I would have liked to have heard more about the technical processes, products and tools rather than about the artists themselves. Yolanda Bartram was good though, I definitely got a few ideas about how to do a body paint – something I really want to do in the near future – she was also really helpful in advising me about stencil work.

SUNDAY

This section is actually being written in August, so I am sad to say i have forgotten most of what I would have loved to share with you. The second day consisted mainly f buying items for the Happy slap Boutique kits and yet more Bdellium tools brushes for myself. I wasn’t able to tick everything off my list but i have many new items to play with.

The highlight of my Sunday was assisting Grace McComisky in her demonstration for Temptu Airbrush, Here is a cheeky little picture form their Twitter feed:

We also got given some free goodies from Dana at Ben Nye – I love their products! they have already been put to use this year particularly in my fashion work.

I look forward to attending next year, however I would hopefully like to work with a stall so I can get more experience speaking to people about the products and services companies can offer.

Happy Slap Boutique: Rumpus Vol. 16

22 Jun

I haven’t been able to update this post from images only in a while, so I shall elaborate briefly!

Once again I had the pleasure of working with Happy Slap Boutique at Rumpus. The theme was greatest stories never told, and our room hosted the unhappily ever after chapter of this magical event. Surrounded by blood stained books and a skeleton chandelier, we created a stage of gruesome performances and filled the room with the kind of funky bass beats you can’t help but dance to.

Happy Slap welcomed some new faces to the team, including the enthusiastic Mr Daniel Focker who amazed us with great performances and awesome gymnastics – he even had the bouncers filming his backflips!

As always, I cannot wait to play out at the next Rumpus and explore with all the amazing creature that attend – until next time!

Photo Shoot: Studio Practice with Clare

22 Jun

Today I shot with my friend Clare Chojnowski, I wanted to work on my studio looks and general fashion makeup.

Initially I found this quite overwhelming, but I have realized so long as i set up myself properly I am able to remain much calmer and do my job well. In this instance, the seating height was not correct and so i needed to find a solution that worked for me to enable proper application, rather than sacrificing my self to cause less trouble to others. Once this was sorted we were away! I will be working with Clare again in September to further develop our working methods together and explore a wider range of makeup techniques.

Photo Shoot: Bath Fun with Sofi & Scott

22 Jun

Today I worked with one of my favorite and special friend photographers Scott Salt. We had not yet worked together despite the amount of ideas that had been mentioned so we got it together and found the beautiful little Sofi to come and play with us.

The shoot was initially to be fashion based and shot outdoors, however with miserable weather and a petite model who would fit in a bath perfectly we decided to get our creative minds together and hatch another plan. We decided to colour our water and head towards a more other worldly vision, rather than the standard flowers and candles in the bath look (which whilst pretty its not very inspiring!).

I decided to go for a monotone looking the makeup, using fashion inspired techniques and using a palette of greys, silvers, whites and blacks. At the last moment i decided throwing my powders into the water and across her face may give us an interesting look, blending the water and face into one rather than separate beings. I also experimented with adding glitters (gold and black) and gold sequins. These methods turned out fantastic and created a sense of movement and emotion within the water.

Working with these guys was amazing and i hope to work with them again after the festival season!
